History

At Willowbrook Mead Primary Academy, we believe History should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to investigate theorise and understand. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of the world around them. They should also know how events and people changed the world around them and how this affects the world today.

History is taught as a discrete lesson, with each year group covering two units over the year. Children in Key Stage 2 learn about one ancient period of History and one more modern period. Our units are carefully planned in chronological order to ensure that skills and knowledge are built on as the children move through the school, enabling them to recap on prior learning, deepen their knowledge and develop their skills.

Children learn about Britain’s past and that of the wider world through enquiry and research. They have access to high quality teaching and resources, and have opportunities to handle historic artefacts, as well as experience visits from historical experts. Every child has access to high quality trips that broaden their understanding of different historical periods.

At Willowbrook Mead children will understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups. Children will gain historical perspective by placing their growing knowledge into different contexts, understanding the connections between local, regional, national and international history.
